Celebrity manicurist Mei Kawajiri typically spends her days creating statement nail art for stars like Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, and Bella and Gigi Hadid, but like most beauty professionals, she’s experiencing a lull in business due to the coronavirus pandemic.
That doesn’t mean she’s stopped showing off her work, however. In fact, Kawajiri — who goes by @nailsbymei on Instagram — is getting inspired by the COVID-19 crisis, and recently showed off a series of quarantine-themed manicures on social media.
Earlier this month, Kawajiri stressed the importance of hand hygiene with a sanitizer-inspired look, painting Purell artwork on one hand and an aloe motif on the other (all that scrubbing can leave skin parched, after all).
Next, she applied a set of pointy lavender nails atop purple latex gloves and whipped up a dazzling 3D soap-bubble manicure — yet another reminder to keep those hands clean.
Finally, Kawajiri urged her followers to “#STAYHOME with all the things we need,” riffing on the logos for Bounty paper towels, Scott toilet paper and Amazon along with those for online platforms like TikTok, Amazon, Spotify and Netflix.
The artist’s mini-masterpieces are clearly a hit with her famous clientele. Gigi Hadid dubbed the “stay home” mani “genius,” while Marc Jacobs — himself a beacon of creativity during these dark times — called the gloved look “FIERCE NEXT LEVEL S—T.”
Pop stars Ava Max and Rosalía, meanwhile, both gushed over Kawajiri’s Purell-inspired nail art.
