5 Non-Toxic Nail Polish Brands for a Healthy Nails

Traditional nail polish has a terrible reputation due to chemical ingredients and a strong odour. “Nail polishes include solvents and some compounds that, if inhaled in high numbers, might cause health problems and discomfort,” explains Sabina Wizemann, a senior chemist at the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Health, Beauty & Environmental Sciences Lab.

The good news is that nail polish formulas have greatly improved since this article was published. There are alternatives to the harmful chemical, as well as other potentially hazardous compounds, resulting in “nontoxic” or “normal” nail paint.

What ingredients makes a nail polish non-toxic?

“Products are fast removing ‘toxic’ components from formulas, and some companies are already offering vegan and gluten-free options,” Wizemann notes. Formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate are all absent from the majority of non-toxic nail polishes.

Beyond that, polishes may be nine-, ten-, or even fourteen-free. Here’s a rundown of what’s (thankfully!) lacking from the breakdown of what’s missing (thankfully!) from those formulas:

  • 5-free contains no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor
  • 7-free contains no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene
  • 9-free contains no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, parabens, acetone
  • 10-free contains no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, parabens, acetone, TPHP, TBHP, gluten
